President Tinubu Pays Tribute to Late Afenifere Leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the passing of Pa Ayo Adebanjo, describing the late Afenifere leader as a political icon whose legacy of justice, democracy, and national unity will endure in Nigeria’s history.

In a statement released on Friday, February 14, 2025, President Tinubu expressed profound sorrow over Adebanjo’s death, highlighting his long-standing role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic landscape. The revered elder statesman passed away peacefully at his Lekki, Lagos residence, according to his family.

Tinubu praised Adebanjo’s contributions as a lawyer, statesman, and politician, noting his critical role in Nigeria’s political evolution. A devoted disciple of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Adebanjo held key positions in the Action Group during the First Republic and later led the Unity Party of Nigeria in the Second Republic. His dedication to national development remained unwavering across decades.

The President recalled Adebanjo’s fearless advocacy during Nigeria’s political crises, particularly his role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) after the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election. Tinubu acknowledged Adebanjo’s steadfast support for his own political career, especially during his 1999 gubernatorial election in Lagos State under the Alliance for Democracy.

Despite political differences in later years, Tinubu affirmed that his respect and admiration for Adebanjo never wavered. He described him as a father figure whose principled voice and interventions in national affairs will be sorely missed.

Extending condolences to Adebanjo’s family, the Afenifere community, Southwest governors, and Nigerians at large, Tinubu urged the nation to find solace in the late leader’s enduring legacy.

“The ideals he championed will continue to inspire future generations,” Tinubu stated, praying for the late nationalist’s soul to rest in eternal peace.
