The Plateau State Government House in Little Rayfield, Jos, hosted the 7th meeting of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Forum on Saturday, November 23, 2024, with a comprehensive agenda that touched on party unity, national issues, and the future course of action in the face of growing challenges.
In attendance were key PDP leaders, including members of the National Working Committee (NWC), the PDP Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF), the Board of Trustees (BOT), the National Assembly (NASS) Forum, former governors, former ministers, and other notable party leaders.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Forum issued a communique that addressed several crucial issues affecting both the party and the nation
The Forum acknowledged growing concerns within the party, particularly regarding perceived divisions among members. In response, the leadership emphasized its commitment to maintaining unity and cohesion, reiterating that the PDP remains the best platform for democratic governance in Nigeria. It affirmed its resolve to overcome internal challenges and forge a stronger, united front.
The meeting also addressed the recent postponement of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, expressing sympathy for Governor Eno Bassey of Akwa Ibom State, whose wife passed away. The Forum extended condolences to the governor and his family, urging him to find strength during this time of grief.
The Forum strongly advised the NWC to convene the NEC meeting by the first week of February 2025, allowing ample time for consultations with key party stakeholders. The period between November 2024 and February 2025 will be crucial for addressing the party’s internal issues, including leadership questions and ongoing litigations.
The Forum voiced deep concern over the prevailing economic hardship faced by Nigerians under the APC-led Federal Government. In particular, it called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently review both macroeconomic and fiscal policies in order to improve the welfare of citizens. PDP governors, the Forum assured, would continue to pursue policies aimed at alleviating economic suffering and fostering national progress.
The Forum condemned the manipulation of results in recent elections, particularly the Edo Governorship election, which it claims was skewed in favor of the APC. The PDP asserted that the true winner of the election was its candidate, Mr. Asue Ighodalo, and vowed to continue scrutinizing the Ondo elections, where it alleged widespread vote-buying by the APC. The Forum urged the judiciary to act swiftly to protect the integrity of Nigerian democracy and called for legislative reforms to prevent electoral sabotage.
In an acknowledgment of the role played by the National Assembly, the Forum commended the majority of lawmakers for their dedication to national development. However, it urged them to critically examine all bills to ensure that they promote fairness, equity, and balanced development across Nigeria.
The Forum extended heartfelt condolences to the people of Plateau and Jigawa States, following the devastating fire at Katako Market in Plateau and the tragic tanker explosion in Jigawa. Both incidents resulted in significant loss of life and property, and the PDP leaders pledged support for the affected states during this difficult time.
The Forum expressed sincere gratitude to the government and people of Plateau State for their warm hospitality, highlighting the state’s progress in areas such as social services, tourism, and transportation. The Forum commended Plateau for its visible transformation, which it believes serves as a model for future PDP-led administrations. Looking ahead, the Forum expressed confidence that the PDP would reclaim its rightful position in the political landscape by 2027.
