In a bid to alleviate the impact of skyrocketing fuel prices, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved a two-day off-duty period per week for civil servants on grade levels 01–14. This decision comes as fuel prices have surged from N680 to N1,500 in many major cities, causing widespread economic strain across the country.
The directive, communicated through a circular issued by the office of the Head of Service, aims to cushion the financial burden on junior civil servants who are particularly affected by the high cost of transportation. Signed by Oladipupo Ogunfowora, Permanent Secretary of the Bureau of Service Matters, the circular notes that officers on grade levels 15–17 will continue to enjoy their existing one-day off-duty per week.
Governor Abiodun’s move is intended to offer relief to public servants, ensuring they remain motivated despite the challenging economic climate. The circular further urged Accounting Officers in all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to implement the policy without disrupting service delivery. Mechanisms will also be put in place to monitor compliance and ensure that public services remain efficient despite the adjusted work schedule.
This measure is expected to provide substantial relief to Ogun State’s workforce, helping them manage transportation challenges while maintaining productivity.
