The governments of Edo and Kano States have announced the indefinite postponement of the resumption of primary and secondary schools for the 2024/2025 academic session. This decision comes in response to the worsening economic conditions across the country, which have made it increasingly difficult for parents and guardians to meet the financial demands of school resumption.
The move, which mirrors similar actions by both state governments, is largely driven by the rising petrol prices and the general economic challenges faced by families. The delay affects schools in both states, which were originally scheduled to resume alongside most of the country on Monday, September 9.
In Kano, the Director of Public Enlightenment at the Ministry of Education, Balarabe Kuri, officially made the announcement, stating that the Commissioner for Education, Umar Doguwa, would later announce a new resumption date. Kuri emphasized that the postponement of the September 8 and 9 resumption dates was necessary to address “urgent reasons aimed at enhancing the learning environment for school children.”
He assured that a new resumption date would be communicated to the public soon, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving educational conditions in the state.
