Prof. Ogundiran Appointed Provost, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan

The University of Ibadan has announced the appointment of Professor Temidayo Olusade Ogundiran as the new Provost of the College of Medicine, effective from August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2028. This appointment, approved by the Vice-Chancellor on behalf of the University Governing Council, marks a significant milestone in the institution’s leadership.

Early Life and Education:
Professor Ogundiran was born on February 23, 1960, in Iseyin, Oyo State, to the family of Mr. Jacob Ogundiran and Mrs. Sarah Adegbenjo Adebisi. He completed his primary education at Baptist Primary School, Koso, Iseyin, and his secondary education at Iseyin District Grammar School. He furthered his education at Baptist College, Iwo, where he excelled in his studies and won the prize for the best student in his class.

He gained admission to the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, in 1982 and graduated with an MBBS degree in 1988. During his final year, he co-won the Alice Moboade Akinyele Memorial Prize for the best student in the Department of Medicine. Following his graduation, he completed his internship at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, where he was recognized as one of the two Best House Officers of the Year, earning him an automatic appointment for specialty training.

Professional and Academic Career:
Professor Ogundiran’s illustrious career spans various roles in clinical practice, research, and academia. After his internship, he worked as a medical officer at the Baptist Medical Centre, Saki, and later served in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Gongola State, where he was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for his services.

He began his residency training in Surgery at UCH, Ibadan, in 1991, and earned the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons in 1996. He further obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh by examination in 1999. His academic journey also took him to the University of Toronto, where he earned a Master of Health Science degree in Bioethics, and the University of Dundee, where he received a Certificate in Epidemiology & Global Health.

Clinical and Research Contributions:
As a dedicated clinician and researcher, Professor Ogundiran has devoted his career to cancer care and research, particularly in breast cancer genetics. He has collaborated with international researchers to explore the roles of genetics and environmental factors in breast cancer risk among Nigerian women and women of African ancestry. His work has led to the development of a breast cancer risk-prediction model for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Academic Leadership and Contributions:
Professor Ogundiran has held several key administrative positions at the University of Ibadan and UCH. He served as the pioneer coordinator of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) for undergraduate students in the Department of Surgery, and as Director of the Surgeons in Training Education Programme (STEP) Course of the Royal College of Surgeons of England at UCH, Ibadan. He was also the Head of the Department of Bioethics and Medical Humanities and Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences before his current appointment as Provost.

Recognition and Awards:
Throughout his career, Professor Ogundiran has received numerous scholarships, awards, and fellowships, including the Nigerian Academy of Science Gold Medal Prize in Life Sciences and induction as a Foundation Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to several academic books and journals.

Professor Ogundiran’s appointment as Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, is expected to bring continued excellence in medical education, research, and healthcare delivery. His extensive experience and dedication to advancing medical science and ethics position him as a transformative leader for the institution. As the 13th Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor Ogundiran succeeds Professor Olayinka O. Omigbodun.
