The Nigerian government has issued a stern warning against the display of foreign flags within the country, labeling it a treasonable offense. This declaration was made following a high-level security meeting convened by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.
Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, briefed journalists after the meeting, conveying the President’s message: “We will not allow any individual flying foreign flags in Nigeria. That is a treasonable offense and it will be viewed and treated as such.” The government views such actions as a serious threat to national sovereignty and integrity.
The warning comes amid a backdrop of nationwide protests against hunger and bad governance, which have entered their fifth day. During these protests, in some northern states, including Kano, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Plateau, demonstrators have been seen hoisting Russian flags. The government sees this as a significant breach of national law, as Nigeria is a sovereign nation and any display of foreign flags within its borders is unacceptable.
General Musa emphasized that the security agencies are on high alert to ensure the protection of Nigeria’s sovereignty. He reassured the public that “the President has also said we should convey this: we will not accept anybody, any individual flying any foreign flag in Nigeria. That is a treasonable offense, and it will be viewed and treated as such. So nobody shall allow himself to be used by any individual.”
In response to concerns about the potential for a coup, General Musa categorically ruled out any such possibility, affirming the military’s commitment to defending Nigeria’s democracy. “Nigeria is a sovereign nation, a democratic nation. All security agencies are here to defend democracy and ensure that democracy continues to thrive,” he stated.
The meeting, attended by key security and law enforcement heads, including the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, and the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, discussed the security threats posed by the ongoing protests and the display of foreign flags.
General Musa also addressed allegations that some military personnel were involved in looting during the protests, clarifying that there was no evidence to support these claims after thorough investigations.
The Nigerian government remains resolute in maintaining peace and order and has warned that any individuals or groups attempting to disrupt the nation’s tranquility will face severe consequences.
This decisive stance underscores the administration’s commitment to preserving national unity and upholding the rule of law. Further actions and measures are expected as the government continues to address the situation.
